The English for Specific Purposes (ESP) emphasis prepares graduate students to teach English for Occupational Purposes (EOP), English for Academic Purposes (EAP) as well as English as Second Language (ESL) to adults and younger students in privately run K-12 schools, both in the U.S. and abroad. ESP was developed to help language learners develop the competencies needed to function in a discipline, profession, or workplace. Examples of ESP include Business English, English for the Health Professions, and English for Law.

  Students in this ESP program will learn about the theoretical foundations of ESP and pedagogy and materials development in ESP. In the process they will gain practical experience designing their own materials and teaching in an academic or vocational setting. Students will also gain a foundation in general linguistics, learn about theories of language acquisition, and be introduced to methods for conducting their own research.

  The English for Specific Purposes emphasis is a 36-hour (12-course) program.

Core Courses for the M.A. (6 hrs.):

All M.A. candidates, regardless of which concentration or emphasis is chosen, are required to take the following:

• ENGL 6101 Intro to English Studies
• ENGL 6160 Intro to the English Language

Required courses (9 hrs.):

• ENGL 6165 Introduction to English for Specific Purposes
• ENGL 6167 Research Methods in Applied Linguistics
• ENGL 6168 Practicum in English for Specific Purposes

Students can also select a limited number of courses from outside the Department, as permitted by M.A. guidelines.
