   course description: ENGL 6161 Introduction to Linguistics

 In this course, students will study the sound system (phonetics and phonology), word formation system (morphology and lexicon), phrase and sentence structure (syntax), and history of the English language. In addition, there will be discussion of the interplay of language and speech situation (pragmatics), the acquisition and learning of language, and the varieties of English. This course is helpful in enabling students to ask critical questions about the English language. The course is designed for TESL graduates who need to fulfill Competency 5 of the State-approved specialty studies competencies ("ability to analyze the linguistic components of English").
