Welcome to the Applied Linguistics area of the UNC-Charlotte Department of English.

Faculty:

Dr. Pilar Garcés Conejos Blitvich (assistant professor; research specialties: intercultural pragmatics, English as a Second Language, English for Specific Purposes).

Dr. Boyd Davis (Bonnie E. Cone Distinguished Professor for Teaching; research specialties: historical and comparative linguistics, with focus on social and discourse context). Recipient of the Harshini V. de Silva Award for 2005.

Dr. Ronald Lunsford (professor; research specialties: rhetoric, writing, linguistic theory).

Dr. Elizabeth R. Miller (assistant professor; research specialties: discourse analysis, critical applied linguistics, second language acquisition, adult/immigrant language learning, English for Specific Purposes).

Dr. Ralf Thiede (associate professor; director of undergraduate advising Dept. of English; research specialties: syntactic theory and cognitive linguistics).

Emeritus faculty:

Dr. Lazaros Varnas (research specialties: historical and comparative linguistics, phonology)

Dr. Blair Rudes
(associate professor; research specialties: Native American linguistics, Second Language Learning, bilingual education, morphology).

Besides our undergraduate courses, we currently offer

an M.A. emphasis in Applied Linguistics, for which a Reading List is online,

an M.A. emphasis in English for Specific Purposes (brochure - PDF 1 mb), and

a Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics

and we cooperate closely with the College of Education (especially with the Department of Reading and Elementary Education and the Department of Middle, Secondary, and K-12 Education and its Teaching English as a Second Language program, directed by Teresa Perez (see requirements and catalog description), which offers an M.Ed. in TESL). We are also actively developing a specialization in literacy research and are preparing to contribute elective courses to the new Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.
