Welcome to the Applied Linguistics area of the UNC-Charlotte Department of English.

Emeritus faculty:

Dr. Lazaros Varnas (research specialties: historical and comparative linguistics, phonology)

Affiliated faculty:

Dr. Günther Nold, University of Dortmund, Germany

Dr. Blair Rudes
(associate professor; research specialties: Native American linguistics, Second Language Learning, bilingual education, morphology).

Besides our undergraduate courses, we currently offer 

and we cooperate closely with the College of Education (especially with the Department of Reading and Elementary Education and the Department of Middle, Secondary, and K-12 Education and its Teaching English as a Second Language program, directed by Teresa Perez (see requirements and catalog description), which offers an M.Ed. in TESL). We are also actively developing a specialization in literacy research and are preparing to contribute elective courses to the new Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.
