The UNC Charlotte community mourns the loss of Irina Yarmolenko—“Ira”
to her friends—who died on Monday. She was a joy to all who knew her,
full of spirit, enthusiasm and courage, and is greatly missed. Ira was
a passionate and committed member of the student body. She worked for
the campus newspaper as a photographer and writer, and worked as a
teaching assistant. Ira was in the Russian Club and was active in
student theatre, drawing admiration for the enthusiasm and energy she
brought to a challenging role in last spring’s campus production of
Doctor Faustus. She was 20.
The hearts of our community go out to her family and friends at this difficult time.
A memorial will be held at the Belk Tower on the UNC Charlotte campus at 7:00 pm, Thursday, May 8.
